The Heart of Involvement

Since the early 20th Century, FMC's 90-acre complex in Middleport, N.Y., has played a key role in the growth of the company's Agricultural Products business, but also in the heritage of the Village of Middleport. FMC is one of the largest employers in the area, with a workforce that generates an annual payroll of $3 million and shoulders 12 percent of the local tax base

FMC has been an active contributing member of the Middleport community, supporting local schools, civic groups and service organizations. In addition, FMC is a significant contributor to the Niagara and Orleans County communities, supportive of the United Way, American Red Cross, Middleport Area Food Pantry, Royalton-Hartland School District and Middleport community groups.

Recently, members of FMC's Diversity Leadership Team visited migrant labor camps in nearby Lyndonville and Lockport to see “up close and personal” the economic, housing and daily life of the Hispanic migrant workers who harvest by hand the area’s fruits and vegetables.  The visits were arranged by Sr. Marlena Roeger of the Lockport-based Hispanic Migrant Ministries, and highlighted workers' needs for things that most of us take for granted. As a result, FMC donated $2,000 to Hispanic Migrant Ministries to help provide Spanish-language periodicals.

Product Stewardship

FMC Corporation’s Product Stewardship Program includes:

  • Making health, safety and environmental considerations a priority in manufacturing existing products and planning for new products, facilities and processes;

  • Working with our employees, suppliers, customers, contractors, and partners to promote responsible management of products and processes; and

  • Encouraging constructive communication with our employees, suppliers, customers, neighbors and shareholders on managing health, safety and environmental issues.

Each FMC business incorporates appropriate health, safety and environmental considerations into all stages of each product’s life cycle, including design and development, manufacture/formulation, distribution, storage, end use and final disposal.  Each FMC business communicates information on product hazards and safe handling practices relevant to the needs of our stakeholders, based on a risk characterization and management process.

Product risk characterization and management includes a review of hazard information, as well as the systems for manufacture, distribution and use of the product or product group.  Based on the level of product risk, FMC may implement:

  • customer education programs;
  • training on safe handling practices;
  • recommendations on use of protective equipment; and
  • a review of product distribution practices.

FMC Corporation makes product stewardship information available through customer call centers, the internet, and emergency hotlines.  FMC employees believe that good health, safety and environmental management are essential criteria to being a valued supplier and good corporate citizen.
