Innovation is in our DNA. With strong capabilities in our R&D organization, we create innovative solutions to address food security, one of the largest global challenges, without compromising the environment. We commit to creating products that are consistently better for the planet than any that currently exists in the market. FMC utilizes the Sustainability Assessment Tool to determine if new active ingredients and formulated products in our R&D pipeline are sustainably-advantaged. This assessment, along with other stewardship processes and tools, ensures the introduction and continued use of environmentally sustainable agricultural solutions. The R&D spend used in the metric is inclusive of all variable and fixed costs related to the discovery and development process across all regions. It does not include spend associated with the defense of existing products.

100% R&D spend on developing sustainably-advantaged products by 2025

GOAL METRIC: Innovation
Spend 100% of R&D spend on sustainably-advantaged products.

Sustainability Assessment Tool

FMC developed and utilizes the Sustainability Assessment Tool to determine the sustainability of new active ingredients and formulated products in the R&D pipeline and to evaluate products currently on the market. This assessment, along with other stewardship processes and tools, ensures the introduction and continued use of environmentally sustainable agricultural solutions. Assessment questions are answered in comparison to a benchmark product and the results are indicated in a Sustainability Matrix diagram. A product is considered sustainable if it is better than the benchmark in at least one area, but it cannot retreat in any of the five other areas. If a product is not considered sustainable because its attributes are not as good as the benchmark, then FMC works to mitigate the area of concern.

In 2019, FMC received the American Chemistry Council’s Sustainability Leadership "Transparency & Collaboration" Award for the Sustainability Assessment tool.
